This view shows the sun-bleached town of Ventimiglia on the Mediterranean sea, near the Italian border with France. It was painted from near Bordighera the picturesque Italian seaside resort where Monet was staying. Monet, a northern artist, struggled to capture the brilliant light of the south. Monet knew that the colours he needed – 'a palette of diamonds and jewels because of the blues and pinks' – would shock the viewer. In his letters to his companion Alice he exclaims: 'I am slaving away on six paintings a day. I'm giving myself a hard time over it as I haven't yet managed to capture the colour of this landscape; there are moments when I'm appalled at the colours I'm having to use.'
