The Arts Council of Northern Ireland has collected art since 1943 and has recently gifted its Collection dating from 1943 to 1999 to a range of Museums in Northern Ireland. The Arts Council continues to collect contemporary art with the aim of recognising and promoting the work of local artists, as well as providing a range of opportunities for the public to view these works.
We seek works which demonstrate quality, challenge and innovation. The pieces are by artists from Northern Ireland or by artists living and working in Northern Ireland or, exceptionally, with another connection to Northern Ireland.
Works that are purchased are by both emerging and established artists. The Arts Council does not have a gallery space of its own so artworks are sent out on tour around Northern Ireland and further afield. The work that has been purchased in recent years includes a range of media such as painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, craft and fine art film pieces. For an artist having a work included in a public collection of this type, can be a vital step in helping them to establish their careers locally, nationally and internationally.
Works that have been purchased are regularly updated on our website at http://www.artscouncil-ni.org/artwork/pages/acni/Query.php where you can browse through the Collection.
