More about

The archives and museum at Bethlem Royal Hospital care for a collection of almost 1,000 works of art, including paintings, drawings, ceramics and textiles. The archives and museum were established in the late 1960s and have been managed by a charity, the Bethlem Art and History Collections Trust, since 1992. Collections of patient art gathered by Dr Theophilus Hyslop at Bethlem, and by Dr Erich Guttmann and Dr Walter Maclay at the Maudsley Hospital, were transferred to the care of the Archives and Museum during the 1970s and 1980s, and the collection continues to be added to by donation and purchase. Paintings in the collection include 'Out of the Maze' by William Kurelek, 'It Has Not Worked' by Charlotte Johnson Wahl and 'The Anger Within' by Elise J. M. Pacquette. The archives and museum building was opened on the Bethlem Royal Hospital site in 1969.
