Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery is one of the finest small galleries in Wales. It was established in 1928 and is housed in the Grade II* listed old Shire Hall in Brecon. It has a significant art collection, spanning from the eighteenth century to the present day. The collection is particularly strong in contemporary art with a local Welsh connection. Both the art and artefact collections began with the aim of acquiring works and items with a local importance to Wales as a whole, but more specifically to Brecknockshire. This collections policy has remained largely unchanged in over 80 years. There is a mixture of gifts and purchases in our collection. The latter have often been made with assistance gratefully received from the Brecknock Art Trust, the Art Fund and the Victoria and Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund, amongst others. Our collection is continually expanding and we actively look to acquire works which complement our existing collection. The collection contains works such as Augustus Edwin John’s ‘Welsh Mountains’, Iwan Bala’s ‘Santes Mariona’ and numerous works by Josef Herman. Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery is currently closed due to a major refurbishment. This means we have limited access to the collections.
