The de Havilland Aircraft Museum is the UK’s oldest aviation museum. It is located at Salisbury Hall, a seventeenth-century moated manor house in London Colney, near St Albans in Hertfordshire. During the War, Salisbury Hall was taken over by the Hatfield-based de Havilland Aircraft Company as the secret location for design and development of the DH.98 Mosquito aircraft – the so-called ‘Wooden Wonder’: the first prototype Mosquito was designed and built there and in the late 1950s when the new owner of the Hall opened it to the public, this aircraft was returned to go on public display. As well as having over 20 historic de Havilland aircraft the Museum has a collection of aero engines, documents and paintings of the Company’s aircraft through the years. A small number of these paintings are on display and the remainder are held in an archive on site and may be viewed on request.
