Historylinks Museum is dedicated to the history of Dornoch Parish and is based on the information and artifacts collected by the Dornoch Heritage Society founded in 1983, to preserve the artifacts and memories of the town. The permanent exhibition shows the Cathedral, feuding clans, the shameful burning of Scotland’s last condemned witch and the treachery and violence of Picts and Vikings. There are regular temporary exhibitions. Current displays show a golf professional’s workshop where Donald Ross honed his skills, an unusual insight into Andrew Carnegie at home in Skibo and historic objects and local tales to give a precious insight into the lives of ordinary, and not so ordinary, Dornoch folk. There are several unique films including Highland in 1950 and The Dornoch Light Railway. There is much to involve children with puzzles, quizzes and dressing up. Starting from the Historylinks Museum there is a trail that leads gently through 16 sites of particular historical interest with accompanying guide maps and booklets. It includes The Earls Cross, subject of the only oil painting in the collection.
