More about

The University's collection of paintings is extensive, with works in buildings across the campus. In broad terms, these fall into two groups: an eclectic collection including oils, watercolours, lithographs and screen prints; and portraits of former chancellors and vice-chancellors of the University. The majority of the collection dates back to the 1950s and early 1960s and is indebted to the late Stewart Mason, at that time Director of Education for Leicestershire and member of the University Council. Following a fallow period in the 1970s the purchase of artworks was revived during Sir David 'DEN' Davies' period as Vice Chancellor (1988–1993). Notable works within the collection include 'Baby Asleep in Garden' by John Bratby, 'Race Meeting' by Bryan Organ, 'Deep End' by Frank A. Wilson and 'Happy Day' by Harold Cohen. There are also limited edition prints by Edward Bawden, Bridget Riley and John Piper. Among the portraits of note are those by Oswald Birley, William Bowyer and Bryan Organ.
