About the venue

Broughton House nestles in the ancient heart of the picturesque town of Kirkcudbright, on the banks of the River Dee in Dumfries and Galloway in south-west Scotland. From 1901 to 1933, the house was the home and studio of Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864–1933), a native of Kirkcudbright, and one of the most innovative and successful artists to live and work in Scotland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Behind the pink lime-washed walls a delightfully uplifting collection of art, ceramics, furniture and literature lies waiting to be discovered, together with an enchanting Japanese-inspired garden, which was also partly designed by Hornel.

Th Garden is open from 1st February to 31 March, Monday to Friday 11am–4pm. The House and Garden are open from 1st April to 31st October, daily 12pm–5pm, last entry is at 4.30pm.
