Mar Lodge Estate in the Cairngorms National Park covers 29,380 hectares of some of the most remote and scenic wild land in Scotland. Within its boundaries are remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest, heather moorland, juniper scrub and a part of the high Cairngorm plateau. The estate encompasses four of the five highest peaks in the UK alongside a further eleven Munros (mountains over 3000ft). The late Victorian hunting lodge, originally built in 1895, includes a small collection of original furnishings and a small portrait collection. The estate also contains one of the country’s largest areas of Scheduled Ancient Monuments – from post-medieval townships to remnants of early nineteenth-century sheep farming. These nationally important remains give a fascinating insight into the life and culture which existed at a turning point in the history of these glens.
