Speke Hall, a sixteenth-century black and white half-timbered house was for 10 years the home of Frederick R. Leyland (1831–1892), ship-owner, great art collector, and patron and frequent host to James Abbott McNeill Whistler between 1867 and 1877. Whistler’s most celebrated 'Arrangement in Grey and Black, No.1: The Mother of the Artist’ once hung here. Speke Hall was bequeathed by Miss Adelaide Watt (1857–1921), coming to the National Trust in 1943 and, until 1986, was managed by Merseyside County Council. The paintings do not reflect the history of Speke nor the Norris family, its owners from the fourteenth century.
