Sidney Sussex's paintings are dominated by portraits of College members and benefactors. From the truly iconic full-length portrait of the foundress Lady Frances Sidney (c.1570–1575) and the inquiring gaze of the first Master James Montagu when later Bishop of Winchester (c.1616), to the very fine portraits by James Gunn in the 1930s and 1940s of the Masters G. A. Weekes (1941) and 'Tommy' Knox-Shaw (1949) and the Nobel physicist C. T. R. Wilson (1936), the exquisite rococo Hall presents an impressive array of significant faces. Recently the College acquired a magnificent full-length portrait of c.1620 of the celebrated Jacobean patroness and muse Lucy Harington, Countess of Bedford. It is one of the most fascinating female images of 17th century. There are other fine pieces including a large Victorian 'Lumber Waggon' by John Joseph Barker and landscapes by Keith Henderson, a Neo-Romantic artist whose work is generating increasing amounts of interest. Sidney continues to acquire works through gifts and occasional purchase. It is stressed that the paintings at Sidney Sussex College are not in public ownership. In accordance with the charitable aims of the College, which is a private institution, we are including our paintings on this website to widen public awareness and for the benefit of scholarship.
