The Collections Centre is located in a historically important building on the former Hafod/Morfa Copper Works site, parts of which date back to the 1830s. For most of its industrial life it was used as a rolling shed but was in use as a warehouse before the Local Authority acquired the site in 1980. The building provides nearly 2,000 square meters of open-plan storage space for the reserve collections of both Swansea Museum and the former Maritime and Industrial Museum. Side rooms provide office and additional environmentally controlled storage space. The Collections Centre is easily accessible; there is a large car park alongside and level access. It is ideally located for the interpretation and conservation of this diverse and important collection. The building’s position at the centre of an important world industrial heritage site means it is well placed to operate as an interpretation centre. Plans to further develop and regenerate the surrounding area into a focus for Wales’ rich copper history will compliment the Collections Centre as a heritage venue.
