More about

The Town Hall, built in 1864 to replace an ancient 1615 edifice, fronts Fore Street and St Andrews Street. In it is transacted the municipal business; county court, magistrate's court, police headquarters with cells are here, and there is accommodation in the shape of offices for all the official business of the town. It is a handsome building and contains in the hall portraits of: Kings George I, II and III; Viscount Palmerston KG, GCB, who represented Tiverton for 30 years and who had amusing encounters with a local butcher at each nomination; W. N. Massey, MP; and a fine costly bust of "Pam", as Lord Palmerston was called, which was given by W. North Row, Esq., a sometime mayor. The cost of the building was £12,000 and it is one of the most compact combinations in architecture for a small town hall that we know. The architect was a Mr H. Lloyd of Bristol.
