This painting of Askam-in-Furness is by Bill Bell, a local artist. It is part of a series of paintings, including 'Triptych' by Christine Isherwood, 'Ramsden Square' by Ron Moon, 'Dalton Castle and 'The Cavendish'' by Jamie West and 'Barrow Town Hall' by Graham Twyford, which were commissioned by Barrow Borough Council to commemorate the centenary of the Town Hall in 1987. Bill Bell was a prolific artist and over the years painted many industrial scenes throughout the country, seeking out subjects from the coalmines of South Wales to the underground commuters of London and the mill towns and steelworks of Yorkshire. Bill worked mostly in oils, though occasionally in pastel and watercolour. He was a good choice for this painting as he was brought up in Askam and lived there until his death.
