Painter, printmaker, mural designer and lecturer, born in St Helier, Jersey. He studied at Chelsea School of Art, Birmingham Polytechnic and Wimbledon School of Art. He was a Leverhulme Scholar and gained the Falkiner Award. Elwell was senior lecturer in fine art at Southampton Institute of Higher Education and was a visiting lecturer at Tower Hamlets College. He was interested “in light, movement and change in nature, subjects mainly landscape and water reflections”. Major exhibitions were at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham; John Hansard Gallery, Southampton; Southampton City Art Gallery; and Victoria Art Gallery, Bath, 2000. Also sold work through Berkeley Square Gallery. Southern Arts Association, Southampton University, Salisbury General Hospital and Falkiner Fine Papers hold examples.
