The painting was bought by a small group of RCP fellows in 1966 for £500 to compliment the room after the president complained that he ‘had nothing but a blank wall to stare at' during dinners. Treasurer Richard Bomford felt ‘it would go particularly well with the carpet'. When purchasing it he noted, 'We should not try and strike a bargain. It is not compatible with the dignity of the College'.
