On the advice of Camille Mauclair, Le Sidaner visited Bruges in 1898, finding among the canals a theme which he varied constantly over the years. Evening and night effects on deserted canals became a favourite motif. His second visit to Bruges in 1899 to 1900 lasted over a year. A label from the Goupil Gallery on the back suggests that Mrs Weldon might have bought this from the proprietor, William Marchant, who promoted Le Sidaner's work on the London market.
