The book is inscribed 'Liber quartus Galeni', meaning fourth book of Galen. Left, the man sits at a table, wearing a fur-lined banyan and hat. With his left hand he raises a flask of urine, and with his right hand makes a demonstrative gesture. Centre, a young woman who bends towards him in expectation. Right, a round table at which the man sits: it holds a volume of Galen's works, a skull, drug jars, medicine bottles, etc. Right foreground, a wicker basket of the kind used to carry urine flasks.
