Decamps grew up in the countryside near Picardie, before studying in Paris under Godefroy Jadin and Camille-Joseph-Etienne Roqueplan. He travelled to the south of France, Switzerland and the Orient. His works are notable for their focus on the effects of light in the landscape. This work is not typical of Decamps, but can be compared with the artist's 'Les Singes Musiciens' in the Musée Vivenel at Compiègne. Monkeys were depicted in paintings from the seventeenth century, dressed as humans whilst painting or playing an instrument. Artists used animals in this manner to satirise man's foolish behaviour, and so were also portrayed drinking, gambling or dancing. Decamps exhibited at the Salon from 1827, winning a medal in 1831, and was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1839.
