The theme of passengers in railway carriages of different classes preoccupied Daumier during the first half of the 1860s and provided considerable scope for his powers of social observation. This richly coloured oil sketch emphasises the dark and smokey atmosphere of the crowded carriage, leaving details of facial expression unresolved. It was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1919.
