The painting shows a view of George Square and Union Street, Greenock in the early evening twilight, in heavy rain with and an overcast sky. On the left is a stone pillar and base with a woman shielding herself from the rain with an umbrella. In the mid-distance are two horses and carriages. The scene looks west along Union Street, Greenock.

This work was conserved with the generous assistance of the Scottish Museums Council.
