This is the early draft design for a commissioned mural to be placed in the foyer of the Phase One entrance of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI). Due to the then-recent Piper Alpha disaster, this design was abandoned in favour of a different work called ‘Safe Harbour’. The ARI mural design encapsulates Downie’s experience of the intense activity on the oil platform during her one-week residency placement in June 1988. She has participated in international residencies, having made work in response to diverse environments including a brewery, a maternity hospital, bridges, coastlines and estuaries.
