Charles Napier Hemy studied at Newcastle School of Art. He originally worked decorating churches in Newcastle and a monastery in Lyon at a time when he was seriously considering becoming a priest. In 1863 he began exhibiting his landscape work in London, and two years later, at the Royal Academy. When he settled in Falmouth in the early 1880s he devoted himself entirely to marine painting, often working from his boat out in the harbour.
