Richard Ford was a member of Bath’s powerful business and political elite in the early 18th century. He was a member of the Corporation – the local authority that ran Bath. This was a body of around 40 individuals, who owned much of the property and made all of the important decisions in Bath.

In this painting Ford, with his full wig and generously cut coat, is depicted as every inch the wealthy, confident politician of the 1720s.
