The sitter was born at Carmichael, Lanarkshire, son of James Darling of Thankerton. He became a partner in the firm of Henry Darling and Company, silk mercers, of Princes Street, Edinburgh. He married in July 1889, Rose, daughter of William Small, an Edinburgh merchant. Darling became a Justice of the Peace for the county of the city of Edinburgh and was Master of the Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh from November 1917 to November 1919. He endowed the Alexander Darling Silk Mercers Fund to provide a pension to single or widowed women over the age of 55, who had worked in the manufacture or sale of ladies and childrens’ clothing.
