Modern marble bust of the Roman Emperor Augustus as military commander. The sculptor has used coloured marble to accentuate the clothing, a technique dating from antiquity.
The bust presents Augustus as a young man with short hair, in the Julio-Claudian style. His head turns to the right, devoid of expression. He wears a soldier’s leather breastplate (cuirass) and a military cloak secured across his chest. The clothing is crafted from an assortment of red marbles, including onyx.

Augustus was considered the greatest of all Roman Emperors in the early 18th century and a true patron of art and architecture. Burlington placed this bust above the entrance to Chiswick House, where it presided over scholarly and literary guests including Gay, Swift and Pope – founder of the neo- Augustan Age.
