The mathematician and mathematical historian Augustus de Morgan (1806–1871) was judged at his death to be one of the United Kingdom's most profound mathematicians. He spent his professional life at University College London, where in 1828 he was appointed as the College's first professor of mathematics and its youngest professor. De Morgan wrote prolifically, chiefly articles rather than books, and amassed a fine book collection which became after his death the founding collection of the University of London Library, now known as Senate House Library, University of London. The bust is signed and dated and is on a black marble plinth.
