This portrait is of Augustus William Henry Meyrick as a young man. He is wearing the uniform of the Scots Fusilier Guards. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant General.

His left hand rests upon correspondence from Raby Castle, Durham which was home to Sir William Henry Vane, 1st Duke of Cleveland and his wife Lady Catherine Margaret Powlett. Augustus Meyrick married their daughter Lady Laura Vane on 24 February 1823. They had three daughters Fanny, Edith, and Louisa.
