Travel has provided the inspiration and subject matter for many of Michie’s paintings, such as 'Black Girls Walking in a Sunny Shower, Washington' dating from 1978. Of this work Michie has written: ‘I was in a bus travelling from George Washington’s house at Mount Vernon, passing along by the Potomac returning to Washington. This is an image I glimpsed which I found striking. I made a note and made the painting subsequently. I wished to retain the impression of something seen fleetingly so it is painted in a free manner.'
