Charles Drury Edward Fortnum (1820–1899) was one of the most generous benefactors to the Ashmolean Museum. This portrait of him was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1893. It shows him wearing the gown of a Doctor of Civil Law at Oxford, a degree he was awarded in 1889.
