The artist has enlivened this flamboyant, sketch-like view of the Edwardian castle from across the Afon Seiont, animating with dancing brushwork and hot colour what otherwise might have been just another topographical depiction of the familiar Welsh castle. At least three other views of Caernarfon Castle by the artist are known – two watercolours and another oil painting. Brangwyn was an admired and prolific British artist and designer, best known for his important mural compositions in Europe and America, and as a prodigious printmaker. He made a sensational debut with exotic marine and Mediterranean compositions and illustrations. He had contact with European art and design through his own background (he was born in Belgium) and his many travels in Europe, Africa and the Near East.
