In 1632 Charles I knighted George Cary who later became the first Cary resident at Torre Abbey, buying it in 1662 for £4,300.
This painting is a copy of the original by Van Dyck, a Dutch court painter who is famous for his portraits of the English royal family, most notably Charles I.
