The sitter was a schoolmaster and the Churchwarden of St Mary's Church, Hanwell for many years until the time of his death, 4th May 1901, in his 83rd year. He was an organist and amateur historian, the author of 'Hanwell in Olden Times' (1898). The artist is best known for his paintings of historical scenes, but was also Churchwarden of St Mary’s Church, Hanwell, where he resided from 1894 to 1912.
