Rubens here conflates an episode from Saint John’s Gospel, when Christ demanded of his disciple Peter, ‘Feed my Sheep’ (XXI, 15–17), with the account in Saint Matthew’s Gospel of Christ’s promise to present Peter with the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven (XVI, 13–19). This combination of subjects was rare, although it had been used by Raphael for the Sistine Chapel Tapestries in Saint Peter’s, Rome. The painting was commissioned c.1613–1615 for the tomb of Nicholas Damant (c.1531–1616) in the church of Saint Gudule, Brussels. The picture remained in Saint Gudule until sold by the church in 1800. It was engraved at least five times in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
