In the right foreground is a female nude, half reclining with her back to us, reclining on a tomb or piece of fallen masonry covered with white drapery. The woman has her head supported on her arms, and seems to be mourning. In the centre of the picture are two figures, one with its head in its hands, the other gesturing towards the distance. On the right of the picture is a large tree trunk and the figures are overhung by a mass of foliage. At the bottom of the picture, there appears to be the edge of a lake. To the right of the picture, in the distance, are classical buildings. Behind them are mountains.
