Major General Sir Thomas Valiant served with the Regiment for 18 years, commanding the 82nd Regiment of Foot in Mauritius before joining the 40th Regiment of Foot serving in India. He died in Fort William, Calcutta in 1861 where a monument was erected to him by 'his brother officers as a testimony of their respect and esteem'.
