This self portrait concentrates on Rutherford's first love, the theatre. He cleverly places himself as a reflection in the mirror surrounded by the props from a concert party and theatre costumes. His bowler hat is sat back on his head, his face beams and his eyes twinkle, this is how he wants to be seen. A beer bottle in front of the mirror is placed just below his lips as a visual pun. As an observer of people, Rutherford was an accomplished portrait painter. This is one of the two self portraits he painted and he never let either out of his collection.
