William Gear was one of the first British painters after the Second World War to move into pure abstraction and was regarded as one of Britain’s leading abstract painters. His work is associated with the CoBrA group of artists and he was known for his bold use of colour.

Gear was Curator at Towner from 1958 to 1964 during which time he made significant purchases of contemporary British abstract art. Through his development of the collection Gear was central to raising the profile and reputation of Towner as well as helping to shape the current direction of contemporary collecting.
