Theologian and author; Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge (1706). A controversial figure, he was sued for libel by Bentley, Master of his college, and threatened with the loss of his degrees for his doubts on the historical accuracy of the Bible. Commissioned by Horace Walpole who had purchased Middleton's collection of antiquities for Strawberry Hill in 1744.
