The portrait of Dr David Morrell is set looking south over the High Street of Paisley towards the Paisley Campus. Dr Morrell is wearing the Chair of Court gown of the University and is surrounded by books representing his association with various higher education institutions. This gown is made from plain black cloth with facings of red Paisley brocade and a square collar on the back of black cloth edged with half-inch gold lace. Each sleeve has at the top a red Paisley brocade shoulder piece. With this gown a black velvet mortar board cap is worn with gold button and black tassel.
