The accoutrements of the hunt, including a powder horn, falcon hood and bird-call (producing a high-pitched whistle to attract birds), a hunting bag, horn and net are combined with a still life including a hare, black grouse, partridge and a greenfinch before a distant view of a hunt. The picture was probably painted c.1695–1700 as it shows a similar composition to 'Still Life with a Peacock and Dog', dated 1696 (Paris, Louvre), and shares elements such as the hunting bag, falcon hoods and hunting horn with 'Hares and Pheasant at a Fountain with a Dog' (Jan Weenix P87) dated 1699.
