Derek Wood graduated from University College, Oxford, in 1960 with a BA in Classics, followed by an MA and a BCL. He read for the Bar as a member of the Middle Temple, was called to the Bar in 1964 and became a QC in 1978. He was Recorder of the Crown Court (1985–2002) and also a Deputy High Court Judge and Deputy Official Referee. During his tenure as Principal he oversaw a major expansion of the College, both physically with the Maplethorpe building and the opening up of the West Lawn area and also with a significant increase in number of both students and Fellows. He was also involved in drafting University statutes and Health and Safety Regulations. Derek was appointed CBE in 1995, an Honorary Fellow of University College in 2002 and an Honorary Fellow of St Hugh's in 2003.
