This is a portrait of Dr Francis Warre-Cornish who was born in Bakewell in 1839. He was a Master at Eton College from 1861 until 1893 when he was appointed Vice-Provost and Librarian. According to the Directory of National Biography 1912–1921 he was 'Small and frail, with a gentle voice and quiet manner, he was not a typical schoolmaster'. He retired in 1916, the year of his death. This portrait was painted towards the end of his life when he was Vice-Provost.
