Roche’s father was of French origin but he himself was Glasgow born and bred. In the early 1880s he studied in Paris, not only in the lively studios of the Académie Julian but also at the prestigious official Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Like many of his contemporaries he painted at the village of Grez-sur-Loing, to the south-east of Paris, which had recently become an international artists’ colony much frequented by Britons and Americans. They worked directly from nature in the open air, in emulation of the Paris-based painters who had begun doing just this at nearby Barbizon some 50 years earlier.
