Stanley Hall (1881–1940) was the 3rd Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) President to die in office (1939–1940) and one obituarist considered that he had worked himself to death for the good of the profession and the Institute. He had considerable abilities in management and organisation, which was apparent in his many hospital designs, in particular the new nurses home at Great Ormond Street, London (completed 1935). During his presidency he actively promoted the idea that the profession could contribute to the war effort but more importantly lead the country out of its present problems by building for the future.
