Walter Dendy Sadler's paintings were mostly costume pieces of the 18th or early 19th century period, often with humorous or sentimental themes. His pictures were very popular and were often reproduced in engravings. In this painting, 'Experentia docet', which means 'Experience Teaches', three priests engage in a game of cards over their tea or coffee – a trivial leisure-time pursuit for such men in an elevated occupation.
