Born in Le Harve, Dubuffet moved to Paris in 1918, where he briefly studied art but remained largely self-taught. His real career as a painter began after the Second World War when he developed a powerful, untutored style that sought to emulate the immediacy of art produced by children or tribal societies. Dubuffet first used the term ‘Art Brut’ to refer to art produced without formal or intellectual influences such as that of children, prisoners or psychiatric patients.
