During the First World War (1914–1918) Allenby held a number of senior command positions on the Western Front before he took command of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) in June 1917. He set about improving its organisation, efficiency and discipline and embarked on morale-boosting visits to the front. Allenby also encouraged irregular warfare, increasing support for the Arab revolt led by Colonel T. E. Lawrence. These changes revitalised the campaign. Victory during the 3rd Battle of Gaza (October–November 1917) was followed by the capture of Jerusalem (December 1917), an event that made him a national hero. The need to reinforce the Western Front in early 1918 meant that Allenby lacked the troops necessary to push on until August.
