Field Marshal Sir Gerald Walter Robert Templer came from Loughgall, County Armagh. He served in France from 1917 with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. During the Second World War he worked in the Special Operations Executive. He commanded a division in Italy and was badly wounded in 1944. He retired from the army as its senior soldier, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, in 1970. He was the driving force behind the creation and funding of the National Army Museum in London.
