Hunter’s pictures painted in Ceres and Largo during the early 1920s sold particularly well, especially among the well-to-do collectors of Dundee and Glasgow, and, to a lesser extent, Edinburgh, who had for many years spent their family holidays in this part of Fife. At this time his painting became increasingly energetic and unrestrained in its handling and use of colour, showing a marked contrast to the ever more controlled and rational painting manner of his fellow Colourist, Peploe, Cadell and Fergusson.
